Fun Facts

Almost exclusively planted in Italy (approximately 98% of all plantings). Should not be confused with the Montepulciano region of Italy in Tuscany.

Viticulture Characteristics

Late budding, and late ripening; berries are thick skinned that can yield high quantities. Shows tolerance to heat and drought.

Wine Characteristics

Medium bodied with soft tannins and low acidity; often blended with Sangiovese. Flavors of plum, cherry, tobacco, and herb.
